Guinea Pig Accessories: Santa Hat

Bonjour,

I haven’t posted for a while because I’ve been busy with Christmas presents.  But I wanted to give you the pattern for a guinea pig Santa hat!  (It fits Liv Dolls well too.)

MATERIALS

  • Yarn: I used white bouclé and I Love This Yarn in red.
  • Crochet hook: I used an I (5.50 MM) hook with the bouclé and a G (4.00 MM) hook with the worsted weight.  Change hooks when you get to the color change.
  • Yarn needle & scissors
  • Small wad of stuffing
  • To hold the hat on Clover, I used a yarn scrap, but you can use elastic if you prefer.  It helps if it matches the guinea pig’s fur color, so it blends in better.

THE PATTERN

With bouclé yarn and I hook:

Ch 16.  Join with a slip stitch to form a ring, being careful not to twist chain.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around.  Join with a slip stitch to first sc.  Fasten off bouclé.

With worsted weight yarn and G hook:

Rnd 2: Join yarn with a standing double crochet to the back loop of any of the stitches.  Dc in each st around, through back loops only.  Join with a sl st in first dc.

Rnds 3-5: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch).  Starting in next stitch, dc in each stitch around.  Last dc will be made in the sl st from the previous round. Join with a sl st in first dc.  (Use this starting/ending method throughout.)

Rnd 6: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch).  Starting in next stitch, *dc 2, dc2tog* around.  Join with a sl st in first dc.

Rnd 7: Ch 2.  Dc 3, dc2tog, dc in each of the remaining sts.  Join with a sl st in first dc.

Rnd 8: Ch 1.  *Sc 2, sc2tog* until there are three stitches left to be worked.  Single crochet in each of them.  Join with a sl st in first sc.

Rnd 9: Ch 1.  *Sc 1, sc2tog* around.  Join with a sl st in first sc.

Fasten off.  Weave yarn end through remaining sts and pull to tighten.  Weave in ends.  Make a pom-pom to put on top of the hat.  Add a strap by tying a yarn scrap on both sides of the hat (or you could sew some elastic on).

Please let me know what you think of the pattern!  Have a nice day.
