It’s no secret that I like crocheting Barbie capes. You may recall the long, elaborate ones on Elsa’s dresses here and here. You may also remember the ball gown I crocheted  – I made it with ribbon yarn, but the pattern didn’t show off the yarn too well. My goal this time was to find a pattern that would showcase the pretty colors and texture of the yarn, and it turned out as this love knot cape!

Although it’s modeled on an Ever After High doll, it would fit Barbies too, as the only fitted part is the neck!

Sorry for the lighting in these pictures – the weather is dismal so outdoor lighting is not too practical!

Materials

• Small amount of ribbon yarn (I’m guessing 10-20 yards)
• I (5.50 MM) crochet hook

The Love Knot

This is one of my favorite ‘specialty stitches’ – the best part is it’s super easy to make, as it’s just a single crochet and a chain! Here’s a picture and directions on how to make it. (Click to enlarge.)

Pull up a long loop (about 3/4″) and yarn over (left.) Pull the loop through, making a chain (middle.) The yarn needle in the middle picture is showing you where to insert your hook for the next step. Finally, make a sc through the back bump (right). 1 love knot complete!

Pattern

Chain 7, leaving a 6-inch tail for one of the neck straps.

Row 1: Turn. *Make 2 love knots, sk 1 st, sc in next st* 3x.

Row 2-7 (or desired length): Turn. Make 3 love knots and sc in the top of the next love knot loop (see below picture.) *Make 2 love knots and sc in the top of the next loop* across.

Fasten off and weave in ending tail. Leave the 6-inch tail from the beginning unwoven. Now we need to do the other neck strap. To do this, cut a 9-inch strand of yarn, and tie it onto the other end of the beginning row, leaving one 6-inch tail and one 3-inch tail. Weave in the 3-inch one and leave the 6-inch one out. Cut to desired length.

This is a super easy project, and it’s great to accessorize – in the pictures, Briar is wearing her original outfit but with a crochet cape instead of a store-bought one! It would be great to give as a present along with a Barbie…because who doesn’t like capes?
