Barbie Messenger & Market Bags ~ Free Crochet Patterns

Recently I had a request for a Barbie bag pattern, to go with some previously crocheted dresses. I love getting requests, so, Unknown Commenter, here are two Barbie bags for you and anyone who wants a bag for their Barbie. I hope you enjoy them. 🙂

Since these are pretty small projects, and therefore the patterns are small too, I decided it wasn’t worth making two separate posts; instead, I will divide the post into 2 sections, one for each bag.

As always, I use US crochet terms, here’s the chart you’re probably all used to by now:

Materials:

  • 2 colors of worsted weight yarn (I did light and dark gray I Love This Yarn)
  • Button
  • Size G (4 MM) crochet hook

Special Stitches:

Spike sc = Sc in sc 2 rows below.

~

With main color (light gray for me), ch 11.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across – 10.

Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn, sc across (10)

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in end of each of the next 4 rows, turn to work along starting chain edge, sc 10, turn to work along next row side, sc 4, turn to work across Row 4, sc 10, join with a sl st to join (28)

Rounds 6-8: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around, sl st to join (28)

At end of round 8, change to contrasting color (dark gray for me.)

Round 9: Ch 1, starting in same st, *sc in next 3 sts, spike sc* around, sl st to first st to join. (28)

Change back to main color.

Rounds 10-12: Repeat Rounds 6-8, including color change at end.

Round 13: Repeat Round 9, including color change at end. You can fasten off the contrasting color now.

Round 14: Repeat Round 6.

Begin Flap:

Do not fasten off. Sl st in next 4 stitches (shifts beginning of row.)

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st and in each of next 13 sts (14) –  you should be halfway across the bag.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sts, sc2tog (2 less each row)

Rows 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.

Rows 4-6: Repeat rows 2 and 3 one time, then repeat row 2 once more.

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 3 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts, sc in last 3 sts (buttonhole formed)

Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next st, 2 sc in the chain loop of the buttonhole, sc in next st, sc2tog over last 2 sts. Fasten off.

Strap:

With contrasting color, fold bag in half so you can see where the strap should be. Join yarn at one side of the flap base. Ch 30, slip stitch into other side of flap base. Turn and sl st into each ch across, sl st into original st. Fasten off and weave in all of the ends.

Finishing

Sew a button to the appropriate space, making sure it fits snuggly through the chain 2 buttonhole.

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn (light gray I Love This Yarn for me) – for the flower, you can use a contrasting color if you want, I did the same color for a monotone look.
  • Size G (4 MM) crochet hook

Ch 9.

Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Flip it around so you can work across the other side of the starting chain. Sc in each st across. Sl st to join. (16)

Rounds 2-8: Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each st around, sl st to join. (16)

Round 9: Sl st loosely into next 3 sts (shifts beginning of round to make straps line up.) Ch 1, hdc in same st and in next st. Ch 8, skip 4 sts, hdc in next 4 sts. Ch 8, skip 4 sts, hdc in last 2 sts, sl st to join. Fasten off.

Flower:

You can follow any tiny flower pattern. I based mine off of the gazillions of free flower patterns you can find on the internet. Just do a Google search for ‘crochet flower’ and click on Images and you’ll find a plethora of them. This is the super simple one that I did:

Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. *Ch 1, dc in ring, ch 1, sl st in ring* 5x. Fasten off and sew to bag.

If you’re looking for other Barbie bag patterns, check out these ones from Mamma That Makes. You know that I can never resist making my own patterns ~ I had never seen a Barbie messenger bag before so I felt that it was my mission to change that. 🙂 The smaller one was just to see what it would look like ~ hdc is my favorite stitch.

These bags are really fast to crochet, so if you have someone that wants their Barbie to be fashionable (or perhaps the Barbies are having a sleepover and need an overnight bag), then don’t fear, because you can make them in a half hour or so. If you have any other requests, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Have a fabulous day!

Best wishes from me and Rapunzel!
